Horticultural College and Research Institute for Women, Tiruchirappalli a constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was established in the year 2011 with a mission to develop women as technocrats in commercial horticulture and nutritional security in order to accomplish high productivity and economic self-sufficiency through education, research and outreach. This institute has set a long term vision to sustain excellence in low volume, high value horticultural crops for high remuneration to the growers and develop skilled man power and entrepreneurship in horticulture.
About Horticulture
Horticulture is one of the fastest growing sectors, which shares about 5.5 per cent during the last two decades. This sector has large potential in value addition which generates employment opportunities. Women play a pivotal role in the development of horticulture especially in cultivation of fruits, vegetables and flower crops. They constitute about 60 per cent of horticultural farmers and contribute to the economy of the country. Horticulture sector is moving towards market led horticulture which indicates the income generation through horticultural activities.
Horticulture plays a pivotal role in the food security and has emerged as one of the potential agricultural enterprises in accelerating the growth of economy. Its role in the country’s nutritional security, poverty alleviation and employment generation programmes is becoming increasingly important. It also provides ample scope for sustaining large number of Agro-industries which generate huge employment opportunities.
As far as Tamil Nadu state is considered, women’s involvement in day to day agriculture is 100 percent across the state. The empowerment of women in horticulture / agriculture is vital for maximizing the productivity. The technical empowerment of women ensures economic empowerment in long run. Hence, generating a pool of women technocrats with rich diversity of knowledge in high tech horticulture will foster the national economy.

Library (Digital)
Library is equipped with journals, periodicals, books including facilities for reaching e-books serves the student community. The library has a collection of 13632 books, journals and e-Books for the benefit of the students and the faculty. Facilities for accessing online journals under CeRA Consortium for e-resources are available for staff, students and research scholars.
The library is opened from Monday to Friday 8.15 am to 6.00 pm (Saturday 8.15 am to 2.00pm except 2nd Saturday) and closed on all Sundays and Government holidays. To enhance and enrich the knowledge of the students and scientists, a well equipped modern Library is available with a total collection of 14154 text books, which include back volumes, reference books, etc., Necessary steps have been initiated for accessing online journals in the CeRA (Consortium for e-recourse in Agriculture) of National Agricultural Innovation Programme.
Hostels
Adequate hostel facilities for girl students are available with required amenities including separate dining halls. Students’ hostel contains 108 rooms with insect proof windows, individual cots, ward robes and study table for comfortable stay. The hostel has modernized kitchen and dining hall. The students are accessible with 24 hours RO drinking water facility and Wi-Fi connectivity. Common reading room, fitness centre, TV hall, music instruments room and sick room are also available. The reading room has English and Tamil dailies. Incinerator is installed for waste disposal. Visitors lobby with separate rest rooms are available.
