About Horticulture

Horticulture is one of the fastest growing sectors, which shares about 5.5 per cent during the last two decades. This sector has large potential in value addition which generates employment opportunities. Women play a pivotal role in the development of horticulture especially in cultivation of fruits, vegetables and flower crops. They constitute about 60 per cent of horticultural farmers and contribute to the economy of the country. Horticulture sector is moving towards market led horticulture which indicates the income generation through horticultural activities.

Horticulture plays a pivotal role in the food security and has emerged as one of the potential agricultural enterprises in accelerating the growth of economy. Its role in the country’s nutritional security, poverty alleviation and employment generation programmes is becoming increasingly important. It also provides ample scope for sustaining large number of Agro-industries which generate huge employment opportunities.

As far as Tamil Nadu state is considered, women’s involvement in day to day agriculture is 100 percent across the state. The empowerment of women in horticulture / agriculture is vital for maximizing the productivity. The technical empowerment of women ensures economic empowerment in long run. Hence, generating a pool of women technocrats with rich diversity of knowledge in high tech horticulture will foster the national economy.

Library (Digital)

Library is equipped with journals, periodicals, books including facilities for reaching e-books serves the student community. The library has a collection of 13632 books, journals and e-Books for the benefit of the students and the faculty. Facilities for accessing online journals under CeRA Consortium for e-resources are available for staff, students and research scholars.

The library is opened from Monday to Friday 8.15 am to 6.00 pm (Saturday 8.15 am to 2.00pm except 2nd Saturday) and closed on all Sundays and Government holidays. To enhance and enrich the knowledge of the students and scientists, a well equipped modern Library is available with a total collection of 14154 text books, which include back volumes, reference books, etc., Necessary steps have been initiated for accessing online journals in the CeRA (Consortium for e-recourse in Agriculture) of National Agricultural Innovation Programme.

Hostels

Adequate hostel facilities for girl students are available with required amenities including separate dining halls. Students’ hostel contains 108 rooms with insect proof windows, individual cots, ward robes and study table for comfortable stay. The hostel has modernized kitchen and dining hall. The students are accessible with 24 hours RO drinking water facility and Wi-Fi connectivity. Common reading room, fitness centre, TV hall, music instruments room and sick room are also available. The reading room has English and Tamil dailies. Incinerator is installed for waste disposal. Visitors lobby with separate rest rooms are available.

The Faculty of Horticulture was established during the year 1971 with the formation of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The undergraduate programme B.Sc. (Horticulture) was offered during the year 2002 to 2017.

Hostel Facilities

The University main campus has separate hostels for boys and girls with requisite infra-structural facilities. There are six hostels for boys and four for girls supported by modern kitchen cum dining hall. An area of 110 acres carved out of Annapannai, Kudumiyanmalai has been allotted to this new college.

A 50ac farm complex complete with farm office, labs, processing unit, seed / pesticide store, threshing floor, animal shed and shed for implements have been provided. Implements, equipments viz;, seed drill, kono weeder, cultivator, rotavator, chisel plough, disc harrow along with two tractors, one mini tractor and mitubisi power tiller are available. Animal shed complex replete with dairy unit, cattle shed, goatery, piggery and poultry are under construction. Biogas facilities like Denabandu model, KVIC model are available.

The campus is involved in imparting agricultural education and extension. All the requisite infrastructure necessary to provide a wholistic education is available as 16 labs including B class meteorological observatory, stadium, generator 125KVA along with well paved roads that are adequately lit using LED lamps and HiMast light.

Computer lab with internet facility and Language Lab Software has also been installed in the computers for improving the English Knowledge of the students. Laboratory facilities for different discipline are being established for elevating the students with lots of practical sessions.

Crop Cafetaria with various crops has been established in the college farm for disclosing hands-on information on various crops. Internet facility is being utilised by the students for various aspects like seminar presentations, assignment writings and to explore additional information about their subjects.

Well established gym and sports facilities are available in this campus for strengthening the physical calibre of the students. Separate courts like volley ball, football, shuttle, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Cricket, flood lit baseket ball courts separately for women and men and Field tracks have been established for improving the individual skill and capacities of the students in various events.

This residential campus is offering four years B.Sc., Agriculture /B.Sc., (Hons) Agriculture degree programme, with an allotted strength of 80 students per Batch. An area of 110 acres from the state seed farm Vazhavachanur has been allotted to this new college, which includes wet land and garden land ecosystems with bore well irrigation facility and canal irrigation system. Thenpennai river running south of the location is the main source of water for the irrigated crops.

ONLINE COUNSELING

Selection process for general reservation candidates is done only through online counseling.

During online counseling, the candidates will be allotted the Degree and College, based on their rank, community, and choice preferences made by them at the time of application filling, as per the procedure.

OFFLINE COUNSELING

Offline counseling will be conducted for Special reservations (Differently abled, Eminent Sportspersons, and Ex-servicemen), NRI, and Industrial Sponsorship quota. Offline Counseling for Differently abled, Eminent Sportspersons and Ex-servicemen will be conducted ahead of general counseling. Counseling for NRI and Industrial Quota will be conducted after one or two phases of general counseling.

State Government School Quota

Seven and a half percent (7.5%) of seats on a “preferential basis” are reserved for students from State government schools in admission to all undergraduate courses both in constituent and affiliated colleges of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. These students (academic and vocational stream) should have continuously studied from Class 6 to 12 in the State Government Schools of Tamil Nadu.

Libraray

The college library is equipped with number of text and reference books (Print), e-books, e-journals and e-databases. Separate hostels are available for boys and girls, constructed thro’ NABARD funding. The infrastructural facilities for physical education namely stadium, 200 metre track, and Cricket pitch, Courts for Volley ball, Basketball, Kabaddi, Kho-kho, Badminton and Ball Badminton, ground for Football and Indoor games like Gymnasium, Chess, Carom and Yoga hall were created.

Students Hostel Details

Students were accommodated in the newly constructed boys and girls hostels viz., “Thenpennai Boys Hostel” and “Gomuki Girls Hostel”, respectively during December 2017. Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute (ADAC&RI) is a constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. It was first started in Kumulur, Lalgudi Taluk of Trichirappalli district with an annual intake of 40 students in the year 1989. Later, the college was shifted to NavalurKuttapattu, Srirangam Taluk of Trichirappalli District in 1992, in the erstwhile Soil Salinity Research Centre campus. In 1995, a new academic block was constructed with class rooms and laboratories to which the college was shifted in the same campus.

The Mission of the College is to provide exemplary learning environment and academic activities for transforming students into experts in agricultural technology, research process, transfer of technology and agripreneurship; provide innovative solutions for short term and long term issues in agriculture in this region through research, extension and entrepreneurship.

The college has five departments offering undergraduate courses for B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture and postgraduate programmes in Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant breeding and genetics and Entomology. However, advance research, education and extension activities have been carried out in 23 subject disciplines. There are 51 faculty member who constitute the prime scientific manpower requirement to cater to the needs of the farming community and to contribute for agricultural development. Besides there are three lab assistants, 18 technicians and 26 provincialized skilled mazdoors supporting the administrative, teaching, research and extension activities of the college.

Objectives of the programme
  • To produce graduates with better understanding of agriculture and allied sciences and technologies for sustainable agricultural production.
  • To impart agricultural education to the students’ community by creating a sustained platform.

The B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture is a four-year program. The curriculum includes basic courses on agriculture and allied sciences. Students will have rich exposure to farming, laboratory analysis, industry internships and experiential learning courses to earn while learn.  Method of teaching includes lectures, farm work, laboratory analysis, and presentations.

Future Career

Graduates can be employed in the agro-based industries dealing seeds, fertilizer, pesticide, farm implements and equipments and food processing. The graduates are also employed in research institutes, Agri-Clinics, weather and price forecasting and other consultancy sectors. They can also become agri-entrepreneurs.

Classrooms and Laboratories

Four ICT enabled class rooms with a seating capacity of 110 each are available for taking classes for the B.Sc.(Hons)Agriculture/B.Sc.(Ag)courses. The class rooms are equipped with LCD Projector Computer, podium with public address system and wifi facility.

All the major departments have their own laboratory for the conduct of practical classes for UG and PG students. The machineries and equipments in each laboratory are presented in this section.

PG Programme

The College offered Post graduate degree programme in Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Entomology, Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry. At present 42 students are studying PG programme in the discipline.

Students Welfare Committee with the Dean, ADAC&RI as Chairman and Dean HC&RI(W) as  Co-Chairman meets once in six months to discuss the various issues related to hostel and students welfare. Issues and grievances are sorted in a democratic manner after discussing with the student representatives. A continuous feedback is in place to resolve issues as well as in deciding the mess menu.

The Agricultural College and Research Institute, Killikulam is contributing towards the generation of human resources in the field of agriculture. Besides offering quality education, the College serves the farming community of Southern districts of Tamil Nadu through dedicated research in all frontier areas of agriculture and extension activities. It also provides a variety of expert services to the stake holders of this region.

The College was established in 1984 – 85 as the third constituent college of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. It was then upgraded as Agricultural College and Research Institute in 1989 and as Post-graduate institute in 1990. The college became a co-education campus in 1990-91.The institute has secured the best college award during 2002, 2005 and 2009 in TNAU.

Hostel Facilities

The college is having 477 students accommodated in 6 different hostels. A total of 193 boy students are accommodated in two hostels namely, Mullai and Kanthal and 284 girl students are accommodated in four hostels viz., Alli, Shenbagam ,Kurinji and Jasmine.A team of chefs and caretakers assist the administration in catering and to upkeep the hostels and the premises.

The Students Welfare Committee (SWC) is the governing body of the hostel administration, is being convened once in six months regularly to finalize the mess menu, to finalize the works to be carried out in the hostel.

  1. Modernized Kitchen:  students’ hostel has a fully modernized kitchen to prepare the food items hygienically by using steam and L.P. Gas. The food is prepared in centralized kitchen and distributed to the three dining halls. The daily mess rate average for both boys and girls is Rs. 70/- to 75/- which is comparatively cheaper than other colleges of TNAU.
  2. Desalinized Drinking Water:  To cater the drinking water need of the students, Desalinized water doctor is available in the Hostel premises.
  3. Students Store: A Students Store is functioning in the hostel. In this store, the students can get stationery items, snacks, ice-creams, cool drinks, cosmetic materials etc.
  4. Medical Facility:  The college dispensary is functioning under the supervision of a Full Time Medical Officer, Staff Nurse and Female Nursing Assistant.
  5. Security system:  Security of the students is monitored by CCTV camera in all the hostels. CCTV camera was installed in the hostel and dining hall at the cost of Rs. 2,61,997/-
  6. Vehicle for the students:  An Omni van  is exclusively allotted to the hostel to take students to the hospitals, when the students fell on sick with critical conditions either at day time or night hours.
  7. Staff Canteen:  The college canteen is currently maintained by the hostel administration and our students are enjoying the profit earned from the canteen.

Placement Cell

The Placement Cell in this college imparts soft skills and communication skills to  students through guest lectures and motivational talks. The students are trained to be professionally fit through the annual personality development workshops. Besides, conducting campus interviews, annual job mela, placing students in reputed national and international companies and private banks.

Madurai Agricultural College was started on 17.08.1965 and upgraded to PG centre during 1969. It became a constituent college of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, after its formation in 1971 and came to be known as Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai in 1980. The campus celebrated its Golden Jubilee during 2015. It is the second largest Agricultural College Campus in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

The college is situated 12 km (east) from the Madurai City on Madurai-Trichy National Highway and is 5 km away from Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Station. It is placed at the foothills of historical monument Yanamalai, a small rocky mountain, on the western side of the campus. The green and idyllic atmosphere has made the campus a favourite picnic spot for the students of various schools and colleges, in and around Madurai. The campus also has the famous Chittankulam water tank, which attracts birds and remains an undeclared sanctuary for peacock.
